“I am the space where I am” – Noel Arnaud

Working in situ, the space itself is a point of departure. Some spaces have
an immediate appeal, for example where a specific architectural
characteristic will trigger the imagination. Other spaces take longer to
reveal their unique qualities. It is key to stay attentive and patient. The
ability to observe the space as it is without imposing any pre-existent
ideas is a fundamental condition for the work to begin. Staying receptive to
the smallest, most humble detail makes it possible to notice the beauty in
something impermanent, imperfect or unconventional.

My way of working initiates with this careful observation. Politics as well
as inherent poetry of space is important. Through investigating the history
of the space, its present condition and its use, the work process proceeds
without hierarchy or linearity. In this process, analysis of the space goes
hand in hand with intuition. Every element in the given space can evoke an
emotion, a memory, or an association and lead to the discovery of something
extraordinary within the ordinary. Emphasising something that is already
there by simple and subtle spatial gestures can expose these discoveries.
The work is not medium specific. It is the space itself that dictates which
medium and material best fits the immediate surroundings in an attempt to
make invisible things visible.

Works that proceed from this process are site-specific installations, open
for the public and, more recently, performances. Through the work, a given
space is reformulated and an environment for visual experience is created.
My intention with the work is mostly to create a mental space for a moment
of stillness and silence, thereby attempting to alter the perception of the
viewers and let them discover new aspects within a given reality.

Other interventions instead of dealing with physical space, rather address
the politics or pre-existent ideas of what art is of a certain institution
or context. Instead of creating a visual experience with my intervention,
the work encourages the public to take an active part in the production of
meaning within the context that I am addressing. In these cases, the work is
balancing on an edge where fine arts meet social design.

Medium: performance/glass object
(24×9x5 cm – blown glass)

“SOLD!” is an opening performance especially made for this occasion. The work will be performed by an auctioneer who is instructed by the artist. An auctioneer’s mallet made out of blown glass is the first lot to go “under the hammer”. How much would you pay for an experience?

2# Blow Job (Red Edition 2009)
Medium: site-specific installation/performance

“Blow Job” Red Edition is a performance by Georgina, set up in an available
space for this occasion and performed during the viewings.

“Blow Job” Pink Edition was a debut performance by Georgina in Mechelen (BE)  during a group show Hubris, under the umbrella of stadsvisioenen in June  2009. A boudoir resembling environment with the on-suite was a set up,  filled with balloons, real furniture, various props and references to other  artworks and popular culture. A visitor was invited to explore the space until confronted by the performer’s opening line “Hi there, would you like a blow job?” Ten types of blow jobs were on the menu to face up to the  expectations and to enjoy possible interpretations. A series of photographs was a residue of the debut performance.

The next edition of “Blow Job” is to be set up and executed in the space and time provided by the bidder with the highest offer.

#3: Paper Love
PaperLove3small
Medium: photography
Afmetingen: 40 x 30cm. colour print on foam

“Paper Love” is a work in progress, where characters resembling Columbine and Pierrot in Commedia dell’Arte (a form of improvisational theatre that began in Italy in the 15th century) emerged in a paper outfits, interacting between themselves and the given space. A series of photographs taken with the assistance of Peter Haesendonck is the result of a performance by Inga Cholmogorova with Sarah Benn on the location in the premises of a former men’s wear manufacturer “Vedea”, which had been abandoned for 20 years. A selection of photos presents a framework for a story.
